Gingrich raises the concern the government

General Motors Co. chided Republican Burberry Bags presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's suggestion that the Volt is an "Obama car." "You can't put a gun rack in a Volt," Gingrich said in a line that drew cheers at a speech in Georgia this weekend, and is now appearing in his stump speech. "We believe in the right to bear arms and we like to bear the arms in our trucks." GM spokesman Selim Bingol responded to Gingrich in a new GM blog: "Newt Gingrich has taken up saying that 'You can't put a gun rack on a Volt.' That's like saying 'You can't put training wheels on a Harley.' Actually, you can. But the real question is 'Why would you?' In both examples: It looks weird. It doesn't work very well, and, there are better places for gun racks and training wheels — pickup trucks and little Schwinns, respectively." Bingol added: "Seriously, when is the last time you saw a gun rack in ANY sedan?" GM sells hundreds of thousands of trucks annually, and many owners install gun racks. One Volt owner took to YouTube to demonstrate that it is possible to install a gun rack. Bingol noted that the Volt is probably not the go-to car for a hunting trip. "It can do a lot of things, but if you are looking for a vehicle for your next hunting trip, it may not be your first choice." Gingrich had some words of praise for the extended-range electric Volt travels about 35 miles on battery power before switching to an internal combustion engine. "The Volt is an interesting experimental car," burberry outlet online Gingrich said, noting the average Volt owner makes $170,000, adding: "This is Obama's idea of populism." He said that President Barack Obama in his 2013 budget request wants to boost the federal tax credit for electric vehicles to $10,000, up from the current $7,500. That $10,000 would allow Americans to buy "a decent second-hand car, but it wouldn't be an Obama car." This is the latest example of GM as a political football, as Republicans and Democrats spar over the merits of the $85 billion auto bailout ahead of Tuesday's Michigan primary. Last year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called the Volt "an idea whose time has not come." The Volt has struggled with low sales that haven't matched the company's early expectations in the face of a government investigation into fire risks. Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ended an investigation into the Volt without finding any safety issues. Gingrich has said the Obama administration "engineered" a "government takeover" of GM. He called the bankruptcy restructurings "rotten" because bondholders had to accept large concessions. "Under the secular-socialist machine, the Chrysler and GM bankruptcies became a naked opportunity for political patronage," Gingrich wrote in his book "To Save America." In his latest book, "A Nation Like No Other," published in June, Gingrich raises the concern the government could force Americans to buy GM cars. "Having become deeply involved in GM's operation, the federal government has a vested interest in the company's success. So what is stopping it from requiring Burberry Outlet all Americans — under threat of penalty — to buy a GM car?" Gingrich wrote. In fact, no law would allow the Obama administration to force Americans to buy vehicles from one manufacturer.
